The Multi-Axial Sub-Perineal (MASP) hip joints are designed to
limit excessive internal or external leg rotation and/or excessive
leg abduction. Conventional orthotic solutions to above problems
such as twister cables or pelvic band with hip joints are cumbersome,
bulky and can be cosmetically unappealing.
A good candidate for a MASP joint is someone who is functionally
too good for an RGO but not quite good enough
for KAFOs alone. Typically, such a patient has adequate torso/hip
control and bracing above the hips is not needed, and yet conventional
KAFOs do not track satisfactorily. In other words, the gait is
impaired by the feet toeing in or out excessively or the legs sliding
apart uncontrollably. Some patients who have graduated out of RGOs
use MASP joints with KAFOs.
MASP hip joints consist of two tie rod ends attached to stainless
steel sidebars. The two center balls are connected together with
a spacer. The spacers length is determined by the available space
between the patients inner thighs at 1 to 2 inches below the
genitalia. The wider the spacer, the more vertical foot hiking is
available for ground clearance. Range of rotation can be adjusted
by twisting the sidebars to allow more or less leg rotation in the
desired direction.
